Simple Pizza Marinara
Perfect Red Sauce for all your red sauce needs
For a delicious red sauce on flatbreads, thin crust, deep dish or dipping marinara. With easily on-hand ingredients, quick prep and very little effort, this simple pizza marinara sauce is a great way to impress your guests and eat well!
It all starts with the Sauce.
Well, that not entirely true, but this is a pretty slick recipe. I have used tomato paste and/or stewed tomatoes (then blended/finely chopped) – you’ll either have to dilute it or thicken it.
Simple Pizza Marinara
Equipment
- small saucepan/pot
Ingredients
- ½ can stewed tomatoes finely diced/mashed (or 5 medium tomatoes equivalent, stewed)
- ¼ small onion finely chopped
- ½ jalapeno optional
- 2 cloves garlic finely diced
- 1 tsp basil
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp thyme
- 1 tsp tarragon optional
- salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices bacon finely chopped, optional if vegetarian
- 1 tbsp butter cooking oil for vegan
Instructions
- (Ideally while your dough is rising…)
- Melt butter in saucepan on medium-low heat. Toss in onion and pepper and stir until lightly browned/translucent
- Add tomato, garlic and spices.
- Simmer until reduced to a nice thick, but spreadable sauce, approx 20 minutes. The goal is to have a nice cohesive, but liquid sauce. Imagine the consistency of bolognese/meat sauce.
